Construction is powering ahead on Stage One of the Melbourne Square project being developed by OSK Property and EPF, with premier global contractor Multiplex on track to deliver a spectacular new lifestyle centre for Melbourne.
Set to rise to 54-levels and 69-levels respectively,the Cox Architecture-designed towers will provide a total of 1,043 residential apartments set above an eight-level retail podium including a supermarket, childcare centre and cafes.
The towers will also stand above Southbank’s largest park setting, with a 3,000-square metre public parkland also under construction as part of the development. Designed by Taylor Cullity Lethlean, the parkland includes cascading water features and piazzas that will be the largest in Southbank.
Multiplex Regional Managing Director Graham Cottam says Multiplex is delighted to play a pivotal role in the delivery of the significant precinct for Melbourne.
“Melbourne Square will further activate Southbank, seeing a city block revitalised to become a vibrant vertical village,” he said.
“In particular, the much-needed green open space and commercial tenancies will provide a new level of amenity for residents of Melbourne Square and the surrounding area.”
Cottam says that construction is progressing well, with Multiplex on track to deliver the first stage on time and on budget.
“The eight-level podium is now structurally complete,with construction of the towers above progressing quickly and the glass facade installation already well underway.”
The staged approach to the project will see some major milestones achieved by the end of the year.
The incredible achievement saw the project awarded not just the Residential High Rise Architecture Award Australia but also the Mixed-use Development Award Australia at the ceremony, which is part of the International Property Awards.
The project brings listed Malaysian developer OSK Property’s expertise in large-scale developments to Australia after delivering large townships and awardwinning projects throughout Malaysia.
It has the support of one of the largest sovereign pension funds in the world, the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) Malaysia, which purchased a 49 per cent stake in the project in 2018.
As Cottam explains, Melbourne Square is a fantastic complement to Multiplex’s record workbook in Melbourne, which spans a variety of sectors and sizes.
“As a truly mixed-use precinct, Melbourne Square brings together our expertise in not just residential, but also retail, commercial, and tourism and hospitality construction,” said Cottam.
“With other major projects underway across Melbourne including Collins Arch, Capitol Grand and Swanston Central, we’re proud to be building some of the city’s newest icons.”
With construction progressing smoothly, completion of Melbourne Square is anticipated in August 2020.
“The project has been designed in separable portions, allowing apartments to be completed and handed over while construction progresses on the levels above,” said Cottam.
“Our first apartments are set to be complete later this year, with the first staged handovers expected to follow shortly after.”
The precinct is already making an impression on a global scale, recently named one of the best developments in the Asia Pacific by winning two highly regarded awards for its architecture and design at the 2019 Asia Pacific Property Awards in Bangkok.
