A limited-edition Steinway & Sons piano, named
the Black Diamond, was recently sold to a Chinese family
based in Melbourne for AUD$1 million, This transaction
represents the highest price ever paid for a piano in Australia
ABlack Diamond edition of a Steinway & Sons piano (one of only eight in the world), was recently sold to a Melbourne-based Chinese family for AUD$1 million setting a new record for a piano sale in Australia.

Says Steinway CEO for Australia, Mark O’Connor, “We were absolutely delighted to be able to have such a magnificent instrument available to the Australian public.

The fabulous piano will now be enjoyed and protected by one family for generations to come.”

“What makes the piano so special is that there are only eight of this particular Black Diamond edition in the entire world.”
Says Mark.

“The piano, is different from other pianos owing to its special Macassar Ebony finish and design features including curved prop stick, silver plate internal frame and specially-designed legs.”

The Macassar Ebony wood is worthy of special mention: the wood is extremely rare and expensive, along with most other Ebony members in the Diospyros genus.

The tree grows slowly, has a very limited natural habitat, and is highly desired for the wood’s aesthetic appeal and toughness.

The wood is so named for the Indonesian port-city of Makassar, which is one of the primary points of exportation.

Sales consultant June Phua said that the transaction was shortly concluded after the visit by the Chinese family to a Steinway piano launch in Beijing in the presence of piano great, Lang Lang, piano designer Dakota Jackson and CEO of Steinway Worldwide, Ron Losby.

The piano has a patented Steinway Spirio function which allows the piano to play on its own from an iPad as well as the Spirio R function which can be used to record and playback one’s own performance.
