With its keen attention to detail and rare quality of service at every stage, the practice has recently launched the By RMA Series – an initiative which allows Rob Mills Architecture & Interiors (RMA) to not only design, but also deliver, apartment buildings to the market.

By employing a traditional procurement method, as opposed to the more common design-and-construct method, RMA is able to oversee every element of the process from first sketch to final handover, ensuring that its finely crafted projects are delivered to purchasers exactly as promised.

“Delivering these residences by a traditional procurement process cradles the integrity of the design and the quality of the finished building,” Mills says.

The process of creating a By RMA project begins by sourcing the perfect parcel of land in locations the market desires. The architecture, interiors and landscaping are then designed in-house, alongside contract administration and project management.

The first project to be released through this new initiative is Hampden by RMA, an exquisite collection of nine

large-scale, three-bedroom apartments in the leafy inner Melbourne suburb of Armadale.

“Because we’re delivering Hampden by RMA ourselves, my team and I are available to consult during the entire process,” Mills says.

“We tailor interiors, furniture and even artworks to suit each resident. I pride myself on bringing the same level of care to the design and delivery of apartments as I do for private residences.”

Mills’s affinity with his clients and his deep respect for the character of the locations in which he works allows RMA to create buildings with a deep sense of belonging.

Hampden by RMA is no exception, with each of the residences bearing all the hallmarks of Rob Mills’s reputation: intelligent design, high-quality materials, enduring value and an intrinsic connection to location.

Light, open and spacious, the residences display brick façades and expansive interiors flooded with sunlight, streaming through elegant arched windows.

“We’re interested in our clients’ lives,” Mills says.

From the outside, the signature design feature of Hampden by RMA is the series of arches across the building’s handcrafted brick façade. With the use of natural materials and a soft colour palette, these arches define the building’s character and provide abundant light to each apartment.

“To date, the façade has really driven the majority of interest in the project. There’s something that resonates when you see an arch – it’s inviting and familiar. It’s quite a soft design element, but also brings great strength to a building,” explains Mills.

“We’ve drawn upon our knowledge of single residences and apartment projects to create a building that is technologically advanced, sustainable and healthy to live in. The living experience will be light and joyful and will serve its occupants for generations.”

“We wanted to create interiors that remind you of summertime throughout the year. A light palette with earthy tones was chosen to gently reflect the sunlight and be one with the bricked arches enclosing the interior.”

Reflecting RMA’s commitment to texture and materiality, brick was chosen to form the façade.

“Aside from its texture and colour, brick is such a durable material. It has fantastic thermal qualities and minimal maintenance requirements, which is particularly important for an apartment building where ownership is shared,” adds Mills.

“We never substitute on quality in the procurement process, including the choice of land, which is one of the reasons the value of the residences we design continues to endure.”
